This year I’ll make my daughters’ 7th Halloween costume (who knows what number I am on for myself). I’m a total Halloween nerd and costumes are a big deal in my family, but for anyone, it’s a great excuse to make. And costumes are one of the few articles of clothing that are forgiving of mistakes.
Here are my top 5 reasons to make your kid’s costume:
- Say “I love you” with flair. Investing your time to make something is a precious gift that says, ‘I care about you.’ Homemade and handmade things are worth so much more than things you can buy.
- Up with confidence, down with consumerism. Making things reminds us that we don’t have to buy everything or rely on others to do things for us. Making inspires confidence and develops independence.
- Make magic. Making gives us an outlet to be creative and put our own twist on things. It represents our individuality and uniqueness and allows us to connect with others in special ways.
- It’s fun. Creation inspires imagination. In many forms, it is often play. And, for all of the reasons above. Bonus: what you make will be more comfortable than what you can buy at the store and potentially is something they can wear more than once.
- You can do it together. Assuming your kiddo is old enough, it’s really fun to enlist their help to decide on what to be, what colors to choose, and special touches. The one time I don’t mind my kiddo bragging is when she is beaming and telling people that she and her mommy made her costume.
If you’ve never done it before, or out of creative ideas, check out my shop for creature patterns and kits.
Showing how much you care, building confidence, having an outlet to be creative, having fun, and spending precious creative time with those you love – you can’t buy that anywhere. But you can make it!
