One of my favorite neighborhood gems is the two Little Free Libraries that I have found nearby. A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange where anyone may take a book or bring a book to share. My daughter loves them as a way to get a new book that she wouldn’t otherwise get; I love them as a little view into what books my neighbors are reading, and a great home for books we’re ready to pass on.
You can make your own or order a kit from Little Free Library, a nonprofit organization that inspires a love of reading, builds community, and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world. Get started here.
If you’re not up for starting your own, convince one of your handy neighbors or find the nearest Little Free Library on this map. (Bonus round: give to their impact fund so that your money will be used to place libraries in locations where they can have meaningful difference. Little Free Libraries improve book access which helps improve low literacy rates.)
